Rapper Dok2 talks about working with Jay Park and G-Dragon (from BIGBANG) in Ep. 31 of "Fun With Dumb"

Illionaire Records co-founder Dok2 is a pioneer in the South Korean hip-hop industry, but he rarely gives interviews. Lucky for fans, the rapper sat down on two separate occasions recently to talk about his life and the rise of hip-hop in South Korea. The first interview was for the March 7th face to face with rapper Snacky Chan for Chan's YouTube series - "Undergod."   The second was for American rapper Dumbfoundead's March 20th (ep. 31) podcast of "Fun With Dumb." During the podcast, Dok2 provided a mini-history lesson for anyone interested in South Korean hip-hop. Beginning with his early rise, the rapper says he's been making moves in the industry since 2002 when he was 12-years-old. He told Dumbfoundead that he used to attend a school for foreigners in Busan (because of his mixed Korean, Spanish and Filipino heritage), but after 6th grade he moved to Seoul and did not return back to school (due to family financial reasons). He says he started...

South African singer-songwriter Tyla is one of the hottest rising stars of 2023. She's currently taking over social media with her TikTok viral dance challenge from her latest single- “Water.” The song hit streaming sites in July. It's currently (as of this writing) trending #26 on the site with nearly 13 million views.  According to Billboard, “Water” has also climbed to #1 on Billboard’s U.S. Afrobeats Songs Chart, dated Oct. 21-- stopping the record 58-week streak from Rema and Selena Gomez’s “Calm Down,” which had led the list since Sept. 10, 2022. “Water” marks Tyla's first top spot on any Billboard chart.  The 21-year-old Johannesburg native debuted with her first music video: "Getting Late," featuring Kooldrink in 2021. In early 2023, Tyla joined Chris Brown as the opening act for the European leg of his Under the Influence Tour. She says “Water” is her lead single off her forthcoming album. Check ou...

Beyoncé's Coachella Performance and Tribute to Black College Culture

by Nefertiti Jenkins Many filmmakers have tried to recreate the Black College Experience for the big screen, but few have done it successfully (with the exception of Spike Lee's "School Daze" (1988) and the 2002 hit "Drumline"). So this part of being Black is not widely understood or known. The Black college experience is a huge part of African-American culture, which was on full display during singer Beyoncé's historic and epic performance at the 2018 Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in Indio, CA. Beyoncé is the first black woman to headline Coachella, and on Instagram, Beyoncé's mother, Tina Knowles Lawson, confesses that she had doubts about what was planned for the Coachella crowd. Writing on Instagram, she says she told Beyoncé that she was afraid that the predominately white audience would be confused by the black culture and Black college culture, because it was something that they might not get. Beyoncé's respons...
